PHILOSOPHY

THE MISSION

IMG_20210504_162922.jpg

This Is Dream Roots is the combination of healing offerings provided  by Danielle DZA Osajivbe-Williams, who is concerned with the sensual, the spiritual and the ancestral as lenses from which to make sense of experience. They are intent on bridging the gap between Western psychology, traditional West African and ancestral healing practices, through therapy, arts and spirituality, as a decolonial, regenerative and practical resolve of the timeline we currently find ourselves in.

It is her intention to connect clients with their inner knowing; that is, the knowledge of their bodies and its relationship to other living systems seen and unseen (this can be the environment, cultures and social structures, and more intangible forms connected to their faith). For Danielle, our wellness and liberation is linked to the ability to trust our being and move from a place of awareness (of self and other), resource (resilience) and activation of personal power (àṣẹ).

An important philosophy that underpins their work is belief in the connection between collective and individual healing. Societal conditioning, inequalities, injustice, oppression and environmental collapse can feel out of our control and yet we also can feel as though we are part of the problem. Dedication to look after ourselves, recondition and review our experiences can be an act of resistance and through this dedication, we can not only survive, but come to thrive and embody the collective change we wish to see. This is not to say that these offerings are a toolbox of quick fixes or solutions, but rather, a welcome invitation to the work of living.

THE DREAMER

DZAHabitat.jpg

Danielle DZA Osajivbe-Williams is an integrative counsellor & psychotherapist (MBACP), consultant, wellness practitioner, tarot diviner, Isese/Ifa practitioner, performance artist, lover of trees and daughter of wisdom and freshwater. She plants seeds for liberation via wellness technologies of past/present/future.

Born in the UK to parents birthed by those who migrated from Nigeria, Jamaica and Barbados, her existence has been cultivated by a curiosity around culture, human behaviour and the arts. Spending some of her childhood in Barbados before the complete immersion of the digital age, created a formative experience of what it meant to commune with land and water. Growing up with grandparents on both sides also helped develop a sense of richness and wonderment around history and culture.

A child with prophetic dreams and visions, and a deeply spiritual mother who raised her in various churches, she has a deep sense of and interest in the unseen from both spiritual and scientific perspectives, with the view that science deepens understanding of the spiritual as opposed to disproving it. She has a particular calling to West African spirituality and is also influenced and reverent to Eastern Philosophies, although they have been understood primarily through new age means.

Overall, as an eccentric individual, Danielle has an appreciation and respect for varying perspectives. She holds the view that context is key, with a humility for all she is yet to understand. Her passionate and caring nature has meant that she has dedicated over 10 years to advocating for and supporting young people and adults with marginalised identities (mental health, class, race, learning ability, sexuality, gender, profession), and the environment in academia and educational institutions, voluntary sectors and charity sectors, and governmental organisations.

THE WHY

IMG_20210207_210656_edited.jpg

"I am a two sided coin which possesses both visibility and invisibility.

In this land as other, I adjust to standards I wasn't made to meet.

Intergenerational trauma is embedded in my DNA.

Blackmail, Black Cat, Black Sheep, repeat."

-Danielle DZA Osajivbe-Williams

These services are for those with marginalised identities, for those with experiences that don't fit the mold. For those who have tried to fit a circle into a square. For those who want to tell their own stories on their own terms. Those who are seeking their own voice and narratives. For those who believe in more, or those that sense there is.

Growing research is indicating the importance of understanding the role of the body in trauma, as well as the existence of intergenerational trauma, which contributes to mental and physical health issues. For me this supports psychotherapeutic theories, which state the idea of the past creating relational templates that can impact the present. It also supports the importance of ancestral work, honouring and elevating those who have come before us, healing from the harm they have caused or was inflicted on them. It is also possible to access intergenerational healing and wisdom. For example, repetitive motions are recommended as a tool for nervous system regulation in trauma informed therapy approaches. Repetition is also commonly found in West African ritual and arts.

There has been a prevalent stigma of West African spirituality and some art forms, which have often been pitted as an antithesis to European doctrine, which impacts the hearts and minds of many as a legacy of colonialism. Many of the Indigenous belief systems of West Africa are founded in Animism and belief in the reverence and acknowledgment of the power and spirit that exists within our environments.

Evidence also shows a link between mental health and physical health issues due to climate change, whether due to poor air quality, or lack of green spaces to ground in. Our current climate crisis calls for a reconvening of this respect, combined with heartfelt practices and intentions to live in communion with land and water in ways that are not exploitative, wasteful and thoughtless.
